The European Commission has told Sweden that its courts should refer more legal cases to the European court before coming up with their own judgements.

In a letter sent to the Swedish government in October, the Commission has fired the last warning shots calling on Sweden to refer more cases to Luxembourg.

From 2001-2002, the Swedish High Court called on the EU Court for advice in only three cases, reported Swedish Radio Ekot.

The national Courts are obliged by EU Treaties to seek preliminary rulings from the EU Court before interpreting EU legislation.

The Stockholm government is to send a final reply to Brussels by December to avoid being brought before the EU court for violating the EU treaties - but it has not offered any public statements on the matter.
