US software giant Microsoft has announced that it will appeal a decision by the European Commission to impose record fines on the company.

"The legal standards set by the Commission's decision significantly alter incentives for research and development that are important to global economic growth", Horacio Gutierrez, associate general counsel for Microsoft, said in a statement, according to CNN.

Microsoft's move comes after the Brussels executive in March decided to impose a record fine of 497 million euro on the firm saying that the company had abused its dominant position on the market.

"It is essential to have a precedent which will establish clear principles for the future conduct of a company with such a strong dominant position", said EU Competition Commissioner Mario Monti at the time.
