dinsdag 30 maart 2004

The European Court of Justice today confirmed a ruling by the Court of First Instance which rejected a complaint introduced by a group of members of the European Parliament against the Parliament's decision according to which the European Parliament and its members are subject to control by the European Office for the Fight against Fraud (OLAF). OLAF can conduct administrative investigations within the European Parliament, as in all other European institutions, in cases of suspicion of fraud, corruption or other illegal activities.

Commissioner Michaele Schreyer, in charge of budget and the fight against fraud, declared: "OLAF is the EU's most important instrument in the fight against fraud. One of my central political objectives is to strengthen this office and its independence. The Court of Justice has again confirmed today that OLAF has the right to carry out investigations to fight against fraud in all EU institutions and bodies. This decision has validated OLAF's competence and powers."
