Malta's Foreign Affairs Minister Joe Borg has been chosen for the post of European Commissioner.

Weeks of speculation ended as the Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami made the official announcement today.

"The Maltese government is saying that the Commissioner should be initially nominated to serve in the present commission and would be confirmed in the successive Commission for the next five years", the Prime Minister said.

From 1 May, when the EU enlarges to 25 member states, the Commission will similarly expand from the present 20 members to 30 Commissioners.

But from November, each EU country will have one Commissioner, reducing the number of the EU executive to 25.
