The Hungarian government is expected to discuss a report on the amendment of the constitution necessary for Hungary's accession to the European Union. The Parliament's Committee for European Integration set the end of the year as a deadline for amending the constitution, which requires a two-third majority of votes in the chamber.

The report, drawn up by the Ministry of Justice, tackles the issue of how EU laws can become a part of Hungary's internal laws after the country's accession, the MTI reports. Also provisions on electoral law have to be amended to enable citizens of EU countries with residence in Hungary to vote and stand in local elections after accession to the EU takes place.

Several other candidate countries will likely have to amend their constitution as a condition for EU membership.
