In the framework of Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Slovenian Ministry of the Interior is convening a ministerial conference on the prevention and investigation of child sexual abuse on 12 November 2021. The ministerial conference, which will be held as a video conference, will be hosted by Aleš Hojs, the Slovenian Minister of the Interior currently presiding the EU Home Affairs Council.

The goal of the conference is to highlight the importance of awareness-raising on this pressing issue and to present the key initiatives at the EU level to combat child sexual abuse, which is also a priority of the Slovenian Presidency in the area of home affairs. "Child sexual abuse is the most heinous of crimes because of the far-reaching consequences for the victims," Minister Hojs said, adding: "As a result of the rapid digitalisation and growing use of the internet, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, the digital aspect of these crimes requires special attention."
The ministers will discuss the main challenges in this area and the tools needed to successfully prevent, detect and investigate child sexual abuse and sexual exploitation. They will issue a joint statement on the importance of preventive action and awareness-raising and express support for the development of appropriate tools to detect and investigate sexual child abuse. The joint statement is also intended to influence the European Commission's legislative proposal, which is expected by the end of the year.
The ministerial conference will be attended by the Ministers of the Interior of the EU member states, the Schengen Associated States, the Western Balkans and the United States of America, as well as representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament, Europol and Eurojust.
