Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels: These issues were on the agenda

On Monday, 21 September 2020, the foreign ministers of the European Union met in Brussels under the chairmanship of EU i High Representative Josep Borrell i. The Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas attended the meeting on behalf of Germany.

The agenda of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) included discussions on the recent announcements by the Libyan political leadership, the developments in Libya and how the EU can contribute to resolving the crisis in the country and to a sustained ceasefire. Furthermore, foreign ministers exchanged on common EU and African priorities ahead of the EU-AU foreign ministers meeting scheduled for 28 September 2020 and the situation in Belarus, where protests against President Lukashenko continue.

The Council also returned to the EU's relations with China following the recent summit, relations with Russia, the situation in the eastern Mediterranean, the EU's tense relations with Turkey and the situation in Lebanon following the explosion in the port of Beirut.

The next Foreign Affairs Council meeting is scheduled for 12 October.
