The Minister of Labour and Social Justice, Marius Budăi, delivered the National Statement, at the UN CSW headquarters, New York
The Minister of Labour and Social Justice, Marius Budăi, attended, in New York, the 63rd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), on the topic “Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls”.
On the 13th of March, in the plenary session held at the UN headquarters, the Minister of Labour delivered the National Statement on the priority topic “Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls”.
“Gender equality represents a priority area for the Romanian Government, and this is the reason Romania has included in the social model proposed by the Government Programme the first programme which includes a distinct chapter dedicated to the gender perspective: „Respect and dignity for women”, stated the Minister of Labour, Marius Budăi.
In this respect, the Romanian official reminded that during the last four years the Ministry of Labour and Social Justice has undertaken a reform of the legislation on domestic violence and that measures have been taken to ratify and prepare the implementation of the Istanbul Convention.
The new regulations ensure the protection and guarantee all fundamental rights and freedoms and focus on the needs of the victim. Thus, to prevent domestic violence, the temporary protection order was introduced in order to intervene urgently, in cases of imminent danger.
Moreover, concrete measures are also envisaged for the development of social services: the creation of an integrated national network of protected refuges for the victims of domestic violence, crisis centres for cases of rape and the development of a network of counselling for perpetrators, at local level, as well as the regulation of measures to prevent the recidivism of acts of domestic violence.
One of Romania’s priorities continues to be the reduction of the gender pay gap and the implementation of measures to ensure the work‑life balance for parents and carers.
On Monday, the 11th of March, the Minister of Labour attended the general debate held at the UN headquarters, where he delivered the Statement of the European Union, in the context of Romanian holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
