The Minister of Labour and Social Justice attended the 63rd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, in New York
The Minister of Labour and Social Justice, Marius-Constantin Budăi, attended, in New York, the 63rd session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), on the topic “Social Protection Systems, Access to Public Services and a Sustainable Infrastructure for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls”, in the context of Romania holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
On Monday, Marius-Constantin Budăi organised a ministerial breakfast at the headquarters of the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations. Afterwards, Minister Budăi attended the general debate which took place at the UN headquarters, where he delivered the Statement of the European Union and in the evening he offered a reception in honour of the heads of CSW delegations.
The working breakfast was organized around the topic “Increasing the economic independence of women by reducing gender discrimination in businesses and the difference of participation on the labour market from the gender equality perspective” and offered the opportunity of an informal discussion among ministers and heads of delegations from EU Member States on important issues regarding equal opportunities between women and men. Minister of Labour was joined by Ambassador Ion Jinga, Permanent Representative of Romania to the United Nations and the Secretary of State of the National Agency for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men, Grațiela Drăghici.
During the session of the Commission for the Status of Women, the Minister of Labour delivered the Statement of the European Union, whereby the EU remains, among other things, “committed to achieving equality between women and men and ensuring the full enjoyment of all human rights by all women and girls, men and boys, both within the European Union and worldwide”.
“The EU is committed to working with governments worldwide to achieve real, tangible and lasting progress for women and girl’s empowerment and to ensure that civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights are enjoyed equally by all, free from discrimination, fear and violence in all its forms”, added Marius-Constatin Budăi.
The end of the day was marked by an EU reception in honour of the heads of delegations to the CSW, where Marius-Constantin Budăi appreciated the discussions which took place during the day as being essential to sharing principles, experiences and concerns that can be translated into viable policies.
The event was attended, among others, by Federica Mogherini i, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Deputy Secretary‑General of the United Nations, Amina Mohamed, and the EU Ambassador to the United Nations, Joao Vale de Almeida.
The 63rd session of the Commission on the status of women takes place at the United Nations headquarters in New York, from 11th to 22nd of March 2019.
