EU to speed up introduction of aerodynamic lorry cabs - Council agrees its stance
The EU is bringing forward the introduction of longer, aerodynamic cabs which will reduce air drag to cut down fuel consumption, provide better visibility, safety and comfort for drivers, and improve safety for other road users. Today, the Council's Permanent Representatives Committee approved a mandate for the presidency to start negotiations with the European Parliament on amending the directive on the maximum length of lorries. The amendment will make the derogation on a rounded front design kick in sooner than stipulated when the directive was last revised in 2015.
A more streamlined cab design will lead to fuel savings, reduce emissions and help save lives. Bringing its introduction forward is a very targeted and welcome amendment to the current rules.

Currently, if hauliers want to use such aerodynamic cabs, they need to take this space from the cargo, which would impact on their business.
Both the Council and the European Parliament will need to agree on the final text. An agreement should be reached in February so that this proposal can be concluded during the Parliament's current legislature.
