Updated rules on lorry and bus drivers' training adopted by the Council
The Council today adopted revised rules on professional lorry and bus drivers' training that aim to promote safe and environmentally friendly driving and improve recognition of mandatory training undertaken in another EU country. A provisional agreement on the directive was reached with the European Parliament on 12 December 2017.
This revision addresses a number of practical shortcomings in the current legislation, such as difficulties drivers have in getting their qualifications recognised if they were issued in another EU country. It also strengthens certain important aspects of training including hazard perception, the protection of vulnerable road users and fuel-efficient driving.

In addition, the revision clarifies minimum age conditions and exemptions from requirements to follow additional training.
Technically, the directive amends the existing directive on the initial qualification and periodic training of professional drivers holding a C or D licence. It also introduces related changes to the directive on driving licences.
Today's vote in the Council concludes the legislative procedure at first reading. The European Parliament voted on 13 March 2018. The directive will be signed by both institutions and published in the EU Official Journal. It will enter into force 20 days after publication. For most provisions, member states will have two years to adopt national rules to put them into practice.
