EuroLat plenary in El Salvador: trade and fight against crime and terrorism

The future of the multilateral trade system and the EU-Latin American cooperation against organised crime and terrorism will be discussed by parliamentarians next week in El Salvador.

The 150 members of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat), 75 MEPs and 75 representatives of the Latin American and Caribbean parliaments, will gather in San Salvador from 18 to 21 September for its tenth plenary session.

They will adopt resolutions on trafficking of small and light weapons, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnerhip (TTIP) and Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deals, food price volatility, the future of multilateralism and informal and undeclared work.

The new Working Group on Security, Organised and Transnational Crime and Terrorism will hold two debates on combating them, and on possibilities for cooperation between the EU and Latin American in this field.

Other topics on the Assembly agenda include the regulation of lobbying activities, cooperation in the field of aviation and air safety, illegal fishing, fighting social inequality, sustainable development, the EU-CELAC Common Research Area and access to water as a human right.

In their meetings with representatives of the civil society, EuroLat members will continue assessing how to ensure citizens’ involvement in the monitoring of trade and association agreements. The EuroLat Women’s Forum will also meet in the margins of the assembly.

The President of the European component of EuroLat, Ramón Jáuregui (S&D, ES), will head the EP delegation. From the Latin American side, besides the Co-President, Roberto Requião (Brazil), El Salvador’s President Salvador Sánchez Cerén (tbc) and former presidents of Guatemala, Vinicio Cerezo (tbc), and Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández Reyna (tbc), are expected to attend.

Finally, EuroLat members will exchange views with Salvador’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hugo Roger Martínez Bonilla, on international relations and the preparations of the next EU-CELAC summit, scheduled for next month.

The Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat) is the parliamentary institution of the Bi-regional Strategic Association established in June 1999 in the context of the EU-CELAC Summit (between European Union-Latin American and Caribbean). EuroLat was created in 2006. It meets in plenary session once a year.

EuroLat is a multilateral Parliamentary Assembly composed of 150 members, 75 from the European Parliament and 75 from the Latin America, including Parlatino (Latin American Parliament), Parlandino (Andean Parliament), Parlacen (Central American Parliament) and Parlasur (Mercosur Parliament). The Mexican and Chilean congresses are also

represented via the EU/Mexico and EU/Chile joint parliamentary committees.
