The 25th of April marks 40 years of cooperation between the EU and Tunisia. The High Representative Federica Mogherini and Commissioner Johannes Hahn issued a joint statement to celebrate the anniversary.
They remarked the many challenges and transformations that Tunisia went through over the years: "Tunisia has developed a unique model based on his Arab, Islamic and African background, starting from a vision based on education and emancipation for the women. Tunisians took destiny in their own hands with the 2011 Revolution, pursuing a transition towards democracy, human rights and social justice in a fragile regional context"
Since the 2011 revolution the EU has been the primary supporter of transition in Tunisia and since 2012 the country has become a privileged partner of the EU.
During the latest association council of April 18 2016, the EU has reiterated its determination to support the efforts of the government and civil society to consolidate the country’s democratic achievements and the rule of law, in particular through the implementation of the new Constitution, and to tackle the economic, social and security challenges. Tunisia continues, with courage and determination, on its path towards democracy and the socio-economic reforms that are vital for it to succeed.
