This is a crucial achievement in the effective implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It means that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has verified that Iran has implemented its nuclear related commitments, and that the UN, EU and US will lift their nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions. This important milestone marks a fundamental shift in Iran's nuclear programme.

Since the JCPOA was concluded in July 2015, all sides have been working towards its full and timely implementation. Adoption Day was declared on 18 October 2015, respecting the timeline set out in the agreement and in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231. The work carried out to reach these important milestones has been coordinated by the European Union, in the framework of the E3/EU+3 group and Iran, and in close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In a joint statement today, High Representative Mogherini and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, said: "This achievement clearly demonstrates that with political will, perseverance, and through multilateral diplomacy, we can solve the most difficult issues and find practical solutions that are effectively implemented. This is an encouraging and strong message that the international community must keep in mind in our efforts to make the world a safer place."

As part of the commitments taken under the JCPOA, the EU has lifted all its nuclear related economic and financial sanctions). It has also prepared a comprehensive information note aimed at providing practical information to all interested parties concerning the lifting of the sanctions and the measures adopted at the EU level in that respect (EU information note with business guidelines

The United States has ceased the application of its nuclear-related sanctions on Iran as specified in the JCPOA and issued similar guidelines (US business guidelines).
