King Felipe VI of Spain will address the European Parliament in a solemn session during the next Strasbourg plenary, the Conference of Presidents has confirmed today.

King Felipe had accepted President Schulz's invitation to address the plenary in Strasbourg during his visit to the European Parliament on 15 April. The intervention is now set for Wednesday, 7 October at noon.

"I am delighted that King Felipe has accepted our invitation to formally visit the Parliament and address its plenary." President Schulz stated. "Spain and the Spanish monarchy have been firm supporters of the European project and of European integration. After 30 years since Spain's accession, this will be an excellent opportunity to reflect on the road the European Union and Spain have travelled together, and the one which lies ahead."

This will be King Felipe's second visit to the European Parliament since becoming monarch in June 2014, following his visit on 15 April in Brussels this year. He also visited the European Parliament as Prince of Asturias in 1999 as part of a study visit.

His father, His Majesty Juan Carlos, had also addressed the EP plenary in 1986, months after Spain joined the European Communities, and again in 1998.
