Ahead of an in/out referendum planned for 2017, Simon Budden meets with several British key players in Brussels to talk about the potential consequences of David Cameron i’s plan to reform the EU.

Sean McGuire of the Confederation of British Industries (CBI) agrees with Cameron that the UK’s presence within a reformed EU is best for Britain and for Europe. But will the Cameron’s rhetoric of “renegotiating Britain’s relationship with the EU” - aimed squarely at his own Eurosceptic constituents - win friends in Brussels? Unlikely, says Scottish Nationalist Party MEP Alyn Smith i. He argues Britain needs to give up its “grudging” attitude towards the European project, and present to its citizens a “realistic” picture of Britain’s standing in the EU.
