Qualified majority voting in the Council of Ministers is meant to prevent stalemate but when it comes to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for import as food and feed, agreement hasn’t been reached since 2003.
Using the same template as recent proposals on allowing GMOs to be grown in the EU, the European Commission has proposed to give Member States the power to prohibit the use of imported GMOs even though they’ve been signed off by the European Food Safety Authority.
