Statement by the Spokesperson of High Representative Catherine Ashton on incidents in Benghazi, Libya
The Spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, issued the following statement today:
"The High Representative is concerned about the serious incidents that occurred in Benghazi over the past few days. She firmly condemns the murder ofMrAbdelsalam al-Mosmary and extends her condolences and sympathy to his family andfriends.
Those responsible for violence against the Libyan people, be it shootings or bombings, must be brought to justice to answer for their crimes. The High Representative trusts the authorities will ensure this happens.
The High Representative calls on all Libyans to support national efforts, led by the democratically elected government of Mr Zeidan, to ensure the security and stability of the country in the face of those groups who try to undermine the Libyan transition. She also encourages the Libyan authorities to proceed as quickly as possible with the process of drafting and adopting a new constitution.
The EU remains a firm friend to Libya and steadfast in its readiness to stand by the Libyan people in meeting the challenges ahead. "
