Intensief overleg over EU-meerjarenbegroting in Brussel (en)
Talks on the EU’s €960 billion budget have intensified, with six hours of negotiations in Brussels today.
Speaking after today’s meeting, the Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore TD, said:
"We made good progress today, further narrowing down the issues outstanding between us. I believe agreement is still possible by the end of this month, if there is sufficient will on all sides."
"We are committed to further stepping up our talks over the coming days. I will travel to Strasbourg next week for what will be a key negotiating session."
Over the coming days, discussions will continue between the Irish Presidency, the European Parliament and the European Commission. Two further preparatory meetings will take place before the next political trilogue in Strasbourg on Tuesday 11th June.
The Tánaiste stated:
"There is an urgency to our talks, as we work to ensure this €960 billion in investment can begin to flow into our economies at the start of next year to help generate economic growth and jobs across Europe."
The Council was represented by the Irish Presidency delegation, led by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and Minister of State for European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton.
