Statement by the spokesperson of EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, on the situation following the legislative elections in Djibouti
The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton i, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy i and Vice-President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:
"The High Representative welcomes the peaceful conduct of the legislative elections on 22 February 2013 in Djibouti and the civic engagement of the population and all political parties for the future of the country.
The High Representative calls on the competent authorities to publish the results of the election promptly and transparently. Disputes should be dealt with in accordance with the appeal procedures provided for by law.
The High Representative calls on all Djiboutian political forces to uphold the rule of law, including the right to peaceful demonstration, and to refrain from using violence.
In its capacity as a long-term partner, the EU would like to continue its partnership with the government of Djibouti, with all the political parties, civil society and the people of Djibouti in order to further the country's social, economic and democratic development. "
