Collaboration between member states and the European Commission has been strengthened regarding the efficient realisation of the end points mentioned in the Commission’s Joint Plan for Immediate Action on medical devices, in a meeting that took place in Cyprus between July 17 and 19.

European Health and Consumer Policy Commissioner John Dalli i earlier this year called on Member States for immediate action to be taken at national level to ensure full and stringent implementation of the current legislation on medical devices.

The three-day long meeting at the Golden Bay Beach Hotel in Larnaca, brought together delegates of the Competent Authorities for Medical Devices of EU member states, the EFTA states and the candidate countries and also included participation from the European Commission.

From a strategic point of view, the Commission reported on the progress in drafting the new regulation on medical devices, with the enhancement of the safety of the medical devices on the European market as a main objective. Additionally, the Competent Authorities also discussed the use of patient registries as a means to improve public health.
