Statement by the Spokesperson of EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton i, on the fighting in Sebha, Libya

The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

"The EU is concerned about reports of fighting in Sebha, the capital of the Fezzan region in the South-West of Libya (some 650 km south of Tripoli), which has reportedly led to numerous casualties over the past days.

The EU calls for restraint from all involved in the conflict.

It urges the government to redouble its efforts to make the parties lay down their weapons and to ensure that the wounded can be attended to, and calls for calm be restored to Sebha as soon as possible.

It underlines its support for all efforts aimed at national reconciliation and for the process of democratic transition in Libya. "
