Europees Parlement bezorgd over arrestatie Wit-Rus Ales Bialatski (en)

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek i commented on the news of the arrest of Belarusian human rights defender, Ales Bialatski:

"I have learned with great concern that the Belarusian authorities are continuing the harassment of people struggling for their basic rights. Dragging people of the streets takes us back to the dark communist past that we do not want repeated ever again. This is unacceptable on our continent in the 21st century.

I urge the Belarusian authorities to release Ales Bialatski and the other unjustly detained political prisoners. Such repressive actions will only bring people closer together uniting them to the final goal that of freedom and liberty. Change will eventually come to Belarus as it has come to the shores of North Africa.

The European Parliament always stands by the side of the Belarusian people."

Note to editors:

Ales Bialatski is the President of the Human Rights Centre "Viasna" and Vice-President of International Federation of Human Rights.
