On 19 July 2011, the first meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) under the Polish Presidency took place in Brussels.
At the meeting, the President of the Council Marek Sawicki presented the agenda of the Polish Presidency for the second half of 2011. “It is a great honour and extraordinary pleasure for me to present the agenda of the Polish Presidency with respect to agriculture and fisheries for the following 6 months. Agriculture, rural development and fisheries are issues of great importance for the Polish Presidency and are included in the overall priority of "Secure Europe - food, energy, defence”. We want to highlight the importance of food security for the EU citizens and focus on special functions to be performed by the reformed Common Agricultural Policy,” stated Minister Sawicki.
At the meeting of the Council, the European Commission presented its Green Paper on promotion measures and information provision for agricultural products which will start the debate on changing this policy. This is of utmost importance for the Presidency, since the promotion of European agri-food products on the EU and other markets is crucial for ensuring competitiveness of European agriculture. Issues related to promotion of agri-food products will also be discussed at the informal meeting of the EU Ministers for Agriculture in Wroclaw in September.
The Council was also briefed by the European Commission about the conclusions of the Beef reflection group.
