Spanish, Belgian and Hungarian equality ministers met the permanent President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy i, on 10 June in Brussels, to inform him of the need to establish a joint pan-European equality policy and to present the three-Presidency team's programme, which was approved during the Spanish Presidency.
The Spanish Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, indicated that 'one of the Spanish Presidency's fundamental goals has been to bring the issue of gender equality to the forefront of the European agenda, and we have taken important steps in this direction', such as having made a commitment to end violence towards women and the incorporation of gender considerations into the 2020 Strategy.
The Belgian minister, Joëlle Milquet, and the Hungarian minister, Miklos Réthelvyi, representatives of the two countries which will succeed Spain in the rotating EU Presidency, will also participate at the meeting. The permanent President of the Council congratulated the Spanish Presidency and underscored the high level of coordination between the three countries with regard to this issue. In fact, the three-Presidency team has proposed holding a European Council devoted to the issue of equality.
