Transport and Energy Ministers on the 55% emission reductions by 2030

Met dank overgenomen van Sloveens voorzitterschap Europese Unie 2e helft 2021 i, gepubliceerd op dinsdag 21 september 2021.

On Wednesday, 22 September, energy ministers will convene at a meeting at the Brdo Congress Centre, which will be followed by an informal meeting of transport and energy ministers. On Thursday, 23 September 2021, transport ministers will meet for an informal meeting.

The common thread of the sessions will be a legislative package aiming at a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The informal meeting will be chaired by Jernej Vrtovec, the Slovenian Minister of Infrastructure.

Minister of Infrastructure, Jernej Vrtovec

Minister Vrtovec addressed this topic, saying, "Energy efficiency and renewable energy sources are central pillars of the EU i's path to climate neutrality, whose potential needs to be carefully explored and exploited. Transport is one of the main sectors in ensuring the success of the decarbonisation policy, therefore, we will strive to provide strong political support for the introduction of e-mobility and the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure."

The transition to a greener energy system needs to be accelerated in the future, as energy production and use account for 75% of EU emissions. To this end, energy ministers will discuss the recast of the Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and the Energy Efficiency Directive with a view to setting a more ambitious and binding annual target for decreasing energy consumption at EU level. The two directives are part of the "Fit for 55" package. At the joint meeting, transport and energy ministers will address the common challenges posed by the introduction of mass e-mobility in meeting the targets for reducing emissions from the transport sector. They will work towards cross-sectoral solutions that will enable a financially sustainable supply of energy to the transport sector with sufficient energy to allow uninterrupted travel, in particular on the trans-European transport networks and beyond.

The deployment of an alternative fuels infrastructure, which is also part of the package, will be the main topic of the informal meeting of transport ministers. A successful European transformation of mobility to alternative fuels requires a wide public recharging infrastructure network that allows easy and transparent use for all physical and commercial mobility users who are aware of the importance of the transition to clean transport.
