Portuguese Presidency achieves provisional agreement on reform of the Common Agriculture Policy

The Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union has achieved a provisional agreement between the Council and the European Parliament on the reform of the Common Agriculture Policy.

The Portuguese Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes, who chaired the trilogue negotiations on Thursday and Friday, praised the “spirit of responsibility and commitment” shown by the three institutions and is confident that the agreement will be confirmed by the 27 at the Agriculture Council next week. “The agreement respects the positions of the mandate received from the Council and I am convinced it will have the support of the Member States”, the Minister said at a press conference.

The European Commissioner for the Green Deal i, Frans Timmermans i, who was also present, highlighted the “success of the Portuguese Presidency” with the agreement reached today, while the Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski i, pointed to the “very constructive approach” taken by a “very active, very dynamic presidency”.

The provisional agreement, reached after six months of negotiations led by Maria do Céu Antunes, is expected to be formally adopted by the Member States at the last meeting of Agriculture Ministers during the Portuguese Presidency, which will be held in Luxembourg on Monday.

The negotiations covered the three regulations that make up the reform package for the Common Agriculture Policy which, once formalised, will come into force in January 2023.
