At today’s meeting, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser and the German Minister for Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel discussed Estonian-German relations, Estonian Presidency of the EU Council, the future of the EU and the situation in Ukraine. Foreign Ministers of Estonia and Germany reaffirmed commitment to regional security.

Mikser thanked his counterpart for Germany’s continued contribution to the security of the eastern flank of NATO, including to the Baltic air policing mission. “Increased presence of NATO allies in the region is a priority for us. Europe’s and NATO’s commitment to fulfilling their main objectives helps to prevent risks,” Mikser said.

Foreign Ministers acknowledged that Estonia and Germany have similar views on challenges facing the EU. “At the moment it is important to maintain the unity and determination of Europe,” Mikser emphasised. “Strong EU is in our interests and our partners also expect it,” he added. The unity of Europe is also a priority regarding Brexit, the Foreign Ministers confirmed.

The Foreign Ministers also discussed relations with Russia and the situation in Ukraine. “We must stand united for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” emphasised Mikser. Foreign Ministers agreed that lifting the sanctions cannot be discussed before the Minsk agreements have been implemented. “Russia needs to return to fulfilling its obligations under international law,” he added.

Mikser reaffirmed that Estonia is well prepared for the Presidency of the Council of the EU. “During the Presidency, Estonia will focus on European economy, digital topics and the security of Europe,” he confirmed. Foreign Minister pointed out the Eastern Partnership as one of the priorities of the Presidency that requires continued support for reforms in Eastern Partnership countries.
