More than €82 million from the EU Cohesion Fund to improve waste management in the city of Poznań
The European Commission has approved an investment of more than 82 million euro from the Cohesion Fund to reorganise municipal waste management in the City of Poznań and nine neighbouring municipalities. The project is carried out on the basis of a public-private partnership (PPP i). The City of Poznań concluded with a private partner a multiannual PPP contract covering the design, construction, financing and operation of a facility under the project.
The project, already in construction phase, will enable the fifth largest city in Poland to provide its inhabitants with an environment-friendly and cost-effective waste management system. Overall, 740 000 people will benefit from this investment.
Commenting on the decision, Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu i said “This project is exemplary on many levels. First, it shows how fruitful can a public-private partnership be when it comes to improve the citizens' quality of life. I wish to see this kind of partnership flourish in the coming years. Then, this project demonstrates how Cohesion policy can contribute to sustainable urban development, a key pillar of our policy under the new programming period. Thanks to EU support, the city of Poznańand its surroundings will become a healthier and safer place to live."
The investment comes through the Operational Programme called "Infrastructure and Environment" and it is financed via the priority axis "Waste management and the protection of the earth". The European Union, through the Cohesion Fund, will finance more than 82 million euro out of a total investment of about 229million euro.
Background:
The project concerns the City of Poznań and nine neighbouring municipalities, which together form an inter-municipal association including, the City of Poznań, the Town and Municipality of Buk, the Municipality of Czerwonak, the Municipality of Kleszczewo, the Town and Municipality of Kostrzyn, the Town and Municipality of Murowana Goślina, the Town and Municipality of Oborniki, the Town and Municipality of Pobiedziska, the Municipality of Suchy Las, the Town and Municipality of Swarzędz.
This is a "major project", of which the total investment (VAT included) is above 50 million euro and thus subject to a specific decision by the European Commission whereas other types of projects are approved at national or regional levels.
The co-financing decision for this project falls under the programming period 2007-2013.
Poland has been allocated approximately 67 billion euro in Cohesion Policy funding for 2007-2013 and 77.6 billion euro for 2014-2020.
