Europarlementariërs protesteren tegen benoeming Kroatisch lid Europese Rekenkamer (en)

MEPs urged the Council on Tuesday evening to explain why it appointed Neven Mates as the Croatian Member of the Court of Auditors i after Parliament had voted against the appointment. Budgetary control MEPs also wanted to know if member states still considered Mr Mates' appointment to be credible, in the light of his earlier pledge to stand down if Parliament voted against his candidacy.

MEPs voiced their indignation at the Council appointment and several of them called for the procedure to be reformed in order to give Parliament the right to reject a nominee.

Background

After he was nominated by Croatia, Mr Mates attended a hearing in the Budgetary Control Committee in 27 May 2013. He told the committee then that he would withdraw his candidacy if MEPs vote against him. He subsequently stated this in writing.

However, he failed to make good on his pledge after Parliament voted to reject his candidacy. The Council appointed Mr Mates on 10 July.

Members of the Luxembourg-based Court of Auditors are appointed for six years. The Council decides on the appointments on the basis of nominations from the member states and after consulting the European Parliament.

Procedure: oral question to the Council
