Statement following the meeting between President Barroso and the Prime Minster of Moldova, Iurie Leanca

The President met today the new Prime-Minister of Moldova Iurie Leanca, in his first visit abroad after having assumed his current functions. They have discussed the situation in the country and the importance of political consensus among the major parties to pursue the reforms needed to the modernisation of Moldova. The existence of fully functioning and independent State institutions was also highlighted as the basis for a long term stability of the country. The EU remains committed to the objective of political association and economic integration of Moldova. In this respect both leaders expressed their satisfaction with the substantive completion of negotiations for an Association Agreement, including a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. This constitutes a major achievement in the road to the Eastern Partnership Summit, which will be held in Vilnius in November. On the occasion of the visit of Prime Minister Leanca to Brussels two financing agreements for a total of €90 million were signed. These agreements are designed to fund the reform of the justice sector and help implement the current and future EU-Moldova Agreements. These constitute an expression of our continued support to the success of the country.
