Beoogd Kroatische eurocommissaris Mimica maakt prioriteiten bekend (en)
Neven Mimica i told MEPs he would focus on implementing existing legislation rather than launching new initiatives during his year as consumer protection commissioner at his confirmation hearing in the EP. Croatia, which will be joining the EU on 1 July, has put him forward as commissioner, but he would only be able to serve until next year's European elections, after which a new Commission will be put together.
During the hearing organised by the consumer protection and food safety committees, Mr Mimica said he also planned to prioritise collective redress and consumer rights. "Consumer policy is the closest to EU citizens' concerns and is often the reply to the basic question - what does the Union do for me?" he said.
Mr Mimica added that cooperation would be essential as 11 of the commissioners have portfolios related to consumers. "There are no weak policies, only weak commissioners," he said.
Parliament's Conference of Committee Chairs will meet on Wednesday 5 June and the Conference of Presidents on Thursday 5 June to assess the suitability of Mr Mimica. MEPs will vote on Parliament's final position on 12 June in Strasbourg.
