New Director-General for Agriculture and Rural Development
The Commission has today decided to make Mr Jerzy Bogdan PLEWA Director General of the Agriculture and Rural Development Directorate-General (DG AGRI). The appointment takes effect on 16 April 2013. Mr Plewa, who is 58 and a Polish national, is currently Deputy Director-General in DG AGRI, responsible for Rural Development and Sustainability Policy. Before that he was Deputy Director-General in charge of international affairs in DG AGRI.
Born in Kraśnik, Poland, Mr Plewa graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology in 1978. He finished his PhD in 1982, and worked on research at the School of Life Sciences in Warsaw becoming Associate Professor. He also served as a member of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Food Economy, and Adviser to the President of the National Bank of Poland with responsibility for farm-sector analyses. From 1995 until 1997, he was a Director in the Polish Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development.
From 1997 until July 2004, Mr Plewa was Under-Secretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development, where he was responsible for negotiations on agriculture issues with the EU, other countries and international organisations. During that time, Mr Plewa was also chief negotiator on agricultural affairs in the team negotiating Poland’s accession to the European Union.
