Eurocommissaris Füle (buurlanden) : Montenegro moet onderzoek naar verkiezingen (en)

Brussels (28th February) - Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle i met with leader of the Montenegrin opposition party Movement for Changes Nebojsa Medojevic in Brussels Today.

The main focus of their meeting were the recent publications of audio recordings suggesting irregularities in the run-up to the parliamentary elections as well as alleged intentions to influence unduly the voters' list. The general situation with regard to the functioning of the judiciary and the fight against corruption and organized crime was also discussed.

Commissioner Füle stressed that the EU attaches the greatest importance to the respect of laws guaranteeing the free expression of voter's political will in the elections. "We expect the authorities to fully investigate any allegations in this context and we will continue to monitor this matter closely, notably in the context of the upcoming presidential elections," he said. The Commissioner also recalled that in a country negotiating its accession to the EU, issues such as judicial independence are of a central importance and it is important for Montenegro already now to develop a track-record in this regard.
