German Socialist MEP Martin Schulz i was elected president of the European Parliament on Tuesday morning gaining 387 of the 699 votes cast in the first round. The runners-up Nirj Deva and Diana Wallis received 142 votes and 141 votes respectively. Schulz takes over from centre-right Polish MEP Jerzy Buzek i.
