Presidents of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso i and President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek i congratulated Viktor Orbán i on the Hungarian Presidency i. The Hungarian Prime Minister met the two Presidents before the European Council i’s meeting in Brussels, on 23 June 2011.
As Péter Szijjártó, spokesperson of the Prime Minister informed the Hungarian News Agency MTI: the Presidents of the Commission and the Parliament said that Hungary “proved to be a loyal and cooperating partner,” in carrying out EU tasks.
As on 1 July, Poland officially takes over the rotating presidency from Hungary, Polish Jerzy Buzek particularly asked Hungarians to remain active in EU affairs.
At the meeting, such long-term questions were discussed as the preparations for the next multiannual financial framework.
Viktor Orbán and Mr Barroso also held talks with Herman Van Rompuy i, President of the European Council. During the meeting, they dealt with the preparation of the EU summit, including dominant issues such as the challenges ahead of the Union, and the relevant situation in Greece, the spokesperson added.
Speaking about the package of six legislative proposals on economic governance, drawn up under the leadership of the Hungarian Presidency, Mr Szijjártó told Hungarian journalists that in Brussels, everybody had acknowledged that, “The Hungarian Presidency not only did its utmost for the six-pack, but it had made superhuman efforts.” He reiterated that after reaching the necessary compromises between Member States, the European Parliament (EP) had submitted two thousand amendment proposals. However, only one motion remained open out of the two thousand, Mr Szijjártó added.
The spokesperson mentioned that the EP had postponed the final vote, making way for further discussions. “As outgoing Presidency, we will give all assistance to our successors, so they can reach even more success, and of course, not only upon Mr Buzek’s request, but because of the great importance of the matter,” he declared.
Mr Szijjártó considered it the greatest success of the Hungarian Presidency that Croatia’s accession talks might be concluded by the end of the Presidency’s term.
