Militair Comité EU bespreekt bestrijding piraterij, Bosnië, Libië en Somalië (en)

The Chiefs of Defence (CHODS) of the 27 European Member States met in Brussels today, under the chairmanship of General Håkan Syrén. The agenda focused on capabilities in particular the Pooling and Sharing initiative and on military operations, preceded by a series of information on the ongoing CSDP activities.

In the operations session, the Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) were briefed by the Operation Commanders of EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina confirming the positive assessment in terms of fulfilment of the military responsibilities; EUNAVFOR Atalanta, which, two years after its launch, successfully performs its mission and contributes to improving maritime security off the coast of Somalia; EU Training Mission Somalia, achieving excellent output standards during its second training cycle and EUFOR Libya which if requested by UN OCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) shall be conducted in order to support humanitarian assistance in the region.

The capabilities session was dedicated to key issues launched in the framework of the Member States driven Pooling and Sharing initiative. The session included interventions by the European Defence Agency (EDA) Chief Executive, the Crisis Management and Planning Directorate (CMPD) Deputy Director-General and a Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) representative.

The European Union Military Committee is the highest military body set up within the Council. It is composed of the Chiefs of Defence of the Member States, who are regularly represented by their permanent military representatives. The EUMC provides the Political and Security Committee with advice and recommendations on all military matters within the EU.

General Håkan Syrén, former Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces, has been appointed Chairman of the European Union Military Committee on 6 November 2009.
