Zoran Stancic appointed Deputy Director-General for Information Society and Media
Today the European Commission appointed Zoran Stancic as Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for the Information Society and Media (DG INFSO). He will assist the Director-General in taking forward the DG's work, promoting international cooperation in information and communication technology (ICT) research and representing the Commission in negotiations on ICT development, the regulatory environment and the availability and accessibility of ICT-based services.
In his new role, Mr Stan ci c will reinforce general management within the directorate-general and represent its policy interests to Member States and relevant third parties. The Directorate-General for the Information Society and Media manages over 9 billion euros for ICT research programmes, under the seventh research framework programme (2007–13).
Zoran Stan ci c, a 46-year-old Slovenian, is currently Deputy Director-General in the Research DG, with responsibility for scientific advances. Prior to joining the Commission in 2004, Mr Stan ci c was state secretary for science at the Slovenian ministry of education, science and sport (2000–04), responsible for science policy, fund distribution and international scientific cooperation. From 1999 to 2000 he was deputy director of the Scientific Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He has held visiting appointments at the University of Reading, Université de Paris I (Sorbonne), the University of Trieste and Boston University.
A geodetic engineer by training, Mr Stan ci c began his career as a researcher at the University of Ljubljana. He has authored various scientific papers and seven books in the fields of quantitative methods in archaeology and remote sensing. He will take up his new duties on 1 September 2009.
