David Wright benoemd tot onderdirecteur DG interne markt (en)

Today the European Commission appointed Mr David Wright as Deputy Director-General for the Internal Market and Services (DG MARKT). Under the guidance of the Director-General, he will be responsible for managing the work of the directorates responsible for public procurement policy, free movement of capital, financial services and financial institutions.

The Internal Market and Services DG defines and coordinates overall Community policy for the free movement of people, goods, services and capital. Its aim is to remove barriers to free movement, and to simplify existing rules, so that all European consumers and businesses can benefit from unhindered access to 27 countries and 480 million people. In his new role, Mr Wright will lead policy development, planning and management in his directorates, ensuring consistency of the policy with the Commission's overall strategic objectives.

Currently, Mr Wright is in charge of the directorate responsible for financial services policy and horizontal coordination, financial markets infrastructure, securities markets and asset management at the Internal Market and Services DG (MARKT.G).

Mr Wright, a 55-year-old of British nationality, has held a range of posts at the Commission, including adviser in the cabinet of President Santer, member of cabinet for Sir Leon Brittan, adviser in the Forward Studies Unit (twice) and official in the Industry and Energy DGs. Mr Wright began his career at the Commission in 1977 as an official in the Statistical Office of the European Communities, where he focused on oil and gas statistics.

Prior to his career at the Commission, Mr Wright was employed by the Times Newspapers in London. He is a graduate of Worcester College, Oxford, and Essex University.

Mr Wright will take up his new duties in the coming weeks.
