Within the ambit of the Portuguese Presidency of the EU, an informal meeting of the Committee 133 Textiles will be held in Oporto, from 1 to 3 October 2007.
Within the ambit of the Treaty of the European Union, it is the responsibility of this Committee to support the Commission in matters related to the Textile Trade Policy, namely tariff changes, the celebration of trade agreements, standardization of deregulation measures, export policy as well as trade protection measures, such as measures to be taken in the event of dumping and subventions.
With this meeting, the Presidency intends to encourage a debate on how "To Build a New Competitiveness in the global Market". The presence and testimony of associations and businesses in the sector will give examples of the constant modernization and restructuring which have been taking place, in order to meet the new needs of the market.
It is also the intention of this meeting to show EU's partners the reality of the textile and clothing industry in Portugal, its importance in the transforming sector and its weight in national exports, within the context of this sector's community industry and the present challenges of international trade. This sharing of experiences, in an informal environment, will give rise to an exchange of ideas on the best way the EU may have to meet the needs of this sector.
In this context, the event will include visits to the business venues of this sector and to a technological centre, which will illustrate the focus placed on development and design, innovation of products and processes, marketing and an orientation for market segments with greater added value.
