“With the agreement in principle reached between the Council, the Commission and the EU Parliament in Brussels we are approaching a great European goal under the Italian Presidency: the recognition of sovereignty and autonomy of the single States as regards the cultivation of GMOs”. Such is the statement of the Italian Minister of Environment Gian Luca Galletti concerning the lengthy negotiations in Brussels, to which he participated directly, on the proposal for a Directive on genetically modified organisms.

“With these text, which still has to be formally reconfirmed by the Coreper, we have reached - explains Galletti - a fair and balanced compromise, enhancing the realities of the single States and creating, finally, the necessary conditions to ensure the freedom of choice at national level with respect to the cultivation of GMOs”-

“I think that the European institutions - concludes Galletti - have showed great responsibility and attention as regards a very delicate issues, which concerns the whole society, from farmers to consumers”.
